Scholastic Writing Awards

HHS encourages all writers to enter the annual Scholastic Writing Awards. Students may enter pieces in a wide range of categories, including:

Critical Essay
Flash Fiction
Journalism
Novel
Personal Essay / Memoir

Poetry
Screenplays & Scripts

Short Story
Speculative Fiction

Writing Portfolio (for Seniors only)

If you are interested in submitting a story, essay or poem to these competitions, first check out the rules at…

In any given year, HHS *may* have the ability to help pay for the submission fees. The English Department can cover submission costs on a first come, first served basis. If you have any submissions, please see Ms. Ellam to discuss whether or not the department can still pick up the cost. Students with multiple submissions *may* only receive partial funding, depending on demand.

Students must create an account on the Scholastic Art and Writing website in order to submit. You will need to attach your account to HHS during this process. If you are having any difficulty with creating an account or uploading your works, please contact Mr. Collins.

The deadline is in early December – please see your English teacher or the hallway posters for specific dates.

Please note that the Massachusetts region has gone back to reporting winning pieces by the school & instructor that the submission is associated with. If any HHS student submitted writing through a private instructor at an outside program, they should check in with their private instructor and/or check the online Scholastic portal to see their standings. Students and families in this situation can contact Dan Collins via email if they would like to share any award winning information to be added to any HHS announcements.
